Driving Sustainability

Sustainability is at the core of what we do. We create surface solutions with a clear value to our customers, the environment and society.

We contribute to BASF's corporate commitment to create chemistry for a sustainble future. On the journey toward climate neutrality, BASF is striving worldwide to achieve net zero COemissions by 2050 and to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions worldwide by 25 percent by 2030 compared with 2018 – while growing its production volumes.

We regard sustainability as an imperative along the entire value chain and follow these guiding principles:

  • We source responsibly
  • We produce efficiently and safely for the people and our environment
  • We drive sustainable solutions and support our customers with products and processes which help reduce emissions and save resources

We understand climate change is one of the most urgent challenges facing society and future generations. For us, climate protection is a key task and an essential part of our strategic roadmap. At our production sites and along the entire value chain with our partners, we work continuously to reduce greenhouse emissions from our business activities.

We focus on three priorities

Eco-efficient technologies
With our innovative technologies we empower our customers to harmonize their ecological and economic goals. This ensures profitability while reducing environmental impact.

Safe chemicals
We reduce and remove chemicals in our products that are harmful to health and the environment, seeking out more sustainable raw materials to meet or exceed compliance with legal requirements and regulations.

BASF Sustainability Roadmap (English)

We adjust and improve sustainability parameters during the procurement of raw materials to improve the sustainability of the end product.

For example, we transparently select suppliers who ensure safe working conditions and environmentally compatible extraction of raw materials. This is a key criterion for a purchasing process which meets sustainability requirements.

An additional approach to responsible sourcing focuses on long-term replacement of critical raw materials by more sustainable alternatives. For example, in 2017, we have globally eliminated lead pigments from our refinish paints.

The health and safety of our employees, customers, suppliers and partners is our highest priority. We also work every day to protect the environment.

We commit ourselves to the principles of Responsible Care®. We continuously improve the efficiency of our production plants to save resources.

We develop modern surface solutions that provide long-lasting protection from corrosion, UV radiation and weathering. Our products have an essential impact on the longevity of materials they are applied on and thus protect resources and the environment.

Our employees are fundamental to achieve our goals. We enable and empower them to make the most of their talents and their job. Beyond that, we take responsibility for creating good relationships with our partners across our business and our industry and we implement diverse social responsibility projects in our communities. All this leads to a better quality of life for everyone.
